The edinburgh fringe Festival write up Rrrants

How can I even begin to sum up the days that past in a flurry of walking, drinking and performing (not all in that order, and not all in equal quantities)

First off let me explain who I was with.

Rrrants.  An amazing band of people headed up by Ian Paul and Donna...well...Donna mainly, she makes sure the other two behave to some degree. It was these three that managed to get the rest of us the main gig at the Peartree in the free edinburgh fringe.  An outdoor venue with a large stage and seating for about 50-80. A lot of hard work went into securing the venue and organising everyone.  Anyone who has organised poets before will understand its not the easiest of tasks. So I am proper super grateful for the effort put in there.

For the whole year I had psyched myself up for the event.  Booked a....hotel...(I use the word loosely, we were actually living in a box for the week.  No window, no cupboards, no tea/breakfast/tv/internet/room cleaning/ quite frankly we were lucky we had a bed and air without being charged extra for them.

So Saturday the 20th We managed to randomly get cheap 1st class train tickets from peterborough to edinburgh, and on our way up discovered we were in the same train carriage as Ant Smith, another one of the performers on the Rrrants stage, which was pure fluke.

We got to edinburgh fairly unscathed and found the venue with relative ease. Then went and got drunk.

Sunday was the kick off day. Our first gig was actually on the Royal mile on a stage in the middle of the street.  It had no amplification so we all had to yell our heads off and randomly bombard passing people with flyers and suchlike in order to entice them to our show later in the afternoon.  I had my shot on the stage and it was really tricky as we were competeing with several other acts on the street, but we managed to get a respectable amount of people stopping and listening.

After that we then headed up to our venue (which was about 15 mins walk away) and then performed our first proper show all 2 and a half hours of it.  It was amazing and being a warm sunny sunday the beer garden was full of people, including my friend Runt, who turned up dressed in a complete dog outfit which must have been super warm but it was super fluffy and i'm a sucker for fluffy things...and shiny things...and sparkly/cute/funny/happy things...and things...  Anyway yes day one was a huge success but it wasn't over yet. Oh no.  We all went out and hit the open mic circuit and stumbled on a nice little venue with an open mic called Espionage.  They made us feel like locals and it was amazing. We sang there till about 2am then stumbled home.

Monday was pretty much a rinse and repeat of the sunday, a few more poets were on the bill for the main show and the sun was shining for a second day and we all went out afterwards got drunk and did more open mics. We returned to Espionage where we met some more really lovely people who then dragged us off to a 2nd open mic in the Whistlebinkies.  By the time that one had finished it was 330am by which point there was only me, poeterry and james left and there was talk of going to the Banshee Labyrinth for a third open mic that didnt finish till 5am but thought...hmmm...I'd probably been hardcore enough by that point so me and Paul returned to our easybox for the night.

Tuesday we did something similar again...it started to feel a bit like de-ja-vu but thats to be expected I guess.  Again our show was well recieved with a nice amount of coins being thrown into the Rrrants collection buckets, contrary to popular belief it had nothing to do with the fact that my boobs were practically spilling out of the dress I was wearing and was more due to the fantastic show we had put on.

my friend Pete turned up which was a lovely suprise as I had talked to him for the best part of 7 or so years online but had never met the fellow, and what a lovely guy he was.  We went for hotchocolate after the event and then after saying goodbye to him, me and paul went for a meal with a large chunk of the rrrants crew and then trekked into the deepest darkest parts of Leith to do an open mic at a place called Nobles Bar.  Its always scary going into unknown terretory to perform poetry and comedy songs and we had been warned that leith was a bit on the rough side but we went there anyway and again made loads of new friends and we were all very warmly received.  HUZZAH!

On a roll now Wednesday was looking to be good again back on the mile for more promoting and flyering and walking and then onto our main event. Which again drew in quite a crowd and I think that was the day Ant Smith got his first official complaint.  Clearly doing a poem about shagging dead people isn't allowed.  Anyway undeterred we all headed to the Cruz Ship Bar in leith to do more open mic stuff, only everyones wires got crossed and it turned out only me and Paul turned up.  So rather than having the security blanket of the rest of the Rrrants mob, suddenly it was just us on our own.  Ahhhh.  But it turned out okay.  I practiced some of my lesser known stuff simply because I had a big gig to perform on the Sunday and needed to do some pieces I hadnt tried for ages.  I got free alcohol for my troubles so that was always a bonus.  headed home and got to bed early at only 130am so YAY for an early night.

Thursday was an exciting day.  My sister said she was coming and I hadnt seen her in over a year and a half. I looked outside and saw it proper downpouring with rain...Ahhhh there was the typical scottish weather I had been expecting all week. luckily by the time we got to the venue not only had it stopped raining but the sun had come out with such ferrocity that it almost looked like it hadnt rained at all, and by the time we were halfway into our main show we had an almost full beer garden worth of audience.

She couldnt stay for the whole thing which was a bit of a shame but seeing her for a few hours was nice and we caught up a bit.  Afterwards there was food involved and then the rrrants mob headed into deeper darker parts of leith.  This is where it almost went wrong...(mild peril...you cant have a story without mild peril...) Anyway Basically we walked into this open mic venue called Walkabout, and it was mainly filled with 20-something blokes who had clearly been drinking copious amounts of lager for quite some time.  A rather serious poet friend of mine James got up and delivered some of his poetry and two young lads sat right at the front started making rude comments, really rather loud rude continous comments through his set.  Now james could have just gotten off the stage and abandonned his slot, but he didnt, he carried on and performed his pieces.  The blokes were then just randomly making comments at anyone, trying to start fights and generally being jerks.  So when it came to my turn I got up and sang the 'You're a Wanker' Song directly at them making eye contact and pretty much directing the song at the two drunken tossers.  A large chunk of the pub sang along with me. It was highly cathartic and not long after that the two of them left.  Victory for the poets HUZZAH!!

So Friday was finally here.  My last day of performances before a horrendously early wake up in the morning for the trip back to peterborough.  The rain really truly lashed down on friday for the first half hour of the show it was proper miserable.  But we didnt cancel we didnt. Nope nope.  Like true artists we soldiered on.  We had a stage and we werent about to waste it. The rain cleared up and the sun eventually came out giving the second half of the show a respectable turn out. Then we ran off to an open mic not too far from the main show. The thing was I ran exceptionally late so as a result the moment I walked throught the door it was my slot on the mic (thankyou everyone for holding out till the very last minute) and so That signified my 20th gig out of the 6 days.

There's a few things i've neglected to mention.  A number of the poets really shone for me over the course of the several days. Faye Roberts being the main candidate. I positively adore her imagery and clever word use accompanied by that soft lilting voice just has me captivated and swooning.

Poeterry for his never ending quest of self discovery.  I think he is a very interesting man and his poetry is always so brutally sincere that it can't help but capture your heart.

Danni Antagonist...no wait she wasn't there, but she was certainly noted by her abscence.

The antipoet.  Well what can I say really two really awesome blokes who despite their apparant talent and skill seem very humble about it all.  They're both very speshul (in both senses of the phrase) and I always feel blessed to count them among my friends, As I do with a large percentage of the Rrrants posse. Constant positive vibes just spew from them like a teenager having been binge drinking whiskey all night for the first time. I admire them for everything they do. And I alwyas feel speshul when they join me up on stage.

As I do with donna. who is so calm and collected even when its clear that secretly she isnt.

And finally one last person to mention.  My husband. Paul.  A man whom I dragged around tirelessly all week and who stupidly followed most of the time.  I wouldn't even been anywhere near a stage if it hadnt been for him. Performing at the edinburgh fringe was a wild dream come true.  one of those things you fantasize about but never actually expect to happen and if it hadn't been for him I would still be just boring old me.  Whereas now im boring old me but i've played the edinburgh fringe festival.  Its more than my music and drama teachers ever expected out of me at school.  That makes me feel smugly content.  No matter what people tell you, you can acheive stuff that they say was impossible, because thats exactly what i've done.

Thank you Donna, thank you Ian and Paul, vikki and Emma too

Hears looking forward to next year

Finally here is a piece of video footage of me performing a fw of my songs thanks to faye roberts.

Blyth Power ashes

First off the Blyth power folk/punk festival was amazing.  It tipped it down the first night and me and paul left our tent wide open so when we got back to the tent after watching music it was filled up with water.  DOH, NOT a good start, but with spare clothes on hand we managed to mop up the majority of the tent so huzzah for extra stuff.  Then the well that fed the campsite dried up so noone could drink any water hehehe but joseph got a van and filled it with empty plastic bottles and filled them up down the road for everyone so that was okay, but the thing was the well also fed the loos so the loos wouldnt flush, so they had to get portaloos in to the campsite as a replacement. Twas all a bit of a disaster but at the same time community spirit rallied around and it was just awesome. Friday music was amazing I love love LOVE wob.  Specially souvenier it's like if my life had a soundtrack that would be one of the songs.  I love that song so much! Pog and Cracktown and mourning for autumn, were also great to see again.  The whole of the Blyth power ashes is almost like a massive family.  I'm not sure where I fit into that family, some deranged illicit second cousin but seeing all these bands perform always make me feel really happy that I can be counted among them

Also my set was supposed to be on friday night but the venue had messed up the music liscensing so they had to stop the music at 11 rather than the original 12 so my friday evening slot got moved to sunday afternoon.  It didnt fuss me whatsoever, if anything I was kinda relieved cause the journey to the venue had been hellish,   so I could relax on friday instead of being stressed.  I over did it though and drank faaaar to much it was unavoidable as they had adnams on tap, a girl can't resist things like that.
Saturday was drier and the music was ace, it doesnt get much better that eastfield, anal beard and Blyth power, then sunday was my set. But not before we witnessed the sunday choir regaling Jessi with a song that simply wont get out of my head about how big his nose is.
1pm was approaching pretty quick!  OMG how scared was I, I even screwed up a few obvious songs which annoyed me and only compounded my fear, then I finished my set.  John Beast was really nice to me though.  After my set he came up to me and said that he really enjoyed my set. Then he asked if he could book me for a gig in nottinghamshire, so result there!! The lying scotsman was amazing even as a one woman show, and im glad we got to stay to the bitter end because The charlies and more blyth power was excuse enough to feel sleep deprived in the morning

I took 12 cds with me to sell feeling optimistic that I would manage to sell a couple and the whole lot went pretty quiclkly  after my set(thank you Kerry and Paul for being on the merch stand at that point).  I had other people asking for autographs (which was a new experience for me) and more cds but i didnt have any more with me and the best bit of the whole thing was when this 6 year old girl (zoey, very adorable) came up to me and gave me a picture that she had drawn of me up on stage singing my pet rock charlie song.  That really topped my weekend off beautifully, far more than anything else of the weekend, better than the cd sales, better than my set, shes a really good artist and I drew her a picture as thank you..  im going to laminate her picture and stick it on my guitar!

Having Ed Kerry, their kids and dog (poppy) come see me play was really amazingly cool too and it was ace to spend time with them just chilling out and being chased by wasps together.  Me and my Paul even spent a couple of hours sitting on the merchandise stall selling other peoples stuff for them, which I found quite fun and felt glad that Jessi and Paul stapleton had at least a few hours away from the merchandise shackles.

Thank you really goes to Annie and Joseph for letting me play there again after last year, and I really truly hope I get the opportunity again one day because i'm still buzzing two days later

Blyth Power Ashes 2009

What an awesome weekend.  It started off with a trip to Kettering and the Sawyers venue to get a quick spot of Anal Beard, Wob and Eastfield in  before the main punk/folk weekend.  We haven't had an anal beard fix since June so it was good to have that, and an impulse buying of a set of murderer pin badges seemed like a good idea at the time.  Then friday it was off jaunting up the country to derbyishire.  Hell on the roads and was tipping down when we arrived but with one of those new fangled pop up tent we lobbed it out of the car window and sat in the car until the rain stopped.  The weekend was filled with much mayhem.  Its probably just a good idea to show you loads of pictures and let you figure the rest out for yourself..  All the full sized versions of these pictures and many many more can be found at the following link

 http://pics.sweetp.net/cgi-bin/showthumbs.pl?DIRECTORY=/PersonalPhotos/Friends/20090828_Ripley

Easily one of the best things i've ever done with my life. I was nervous for the whole weekend, worried that maybe my music (thats what we're calling it for the sake of it) wouldn't be accepted or liked and I really needn't have worried. People stayed people listened people laughed and clapped and even though I stumbled through my set like a lobotomised bunny it seemed to go really well.  I still can't believe I played at Blyth Powers 25 anniversary lumb farm gig.  Russel from rachel pantechnicion liked my stuff as well as Paul stapleton from anal beard/pog also really liked my stuff which really boosted my confidence tenfold, annie and Joseph too seemed to enjoy what I did and it made all the stressing super worth while, because I mean I've been going to these muscians gigs for quite a few years now so for them to suddenly be telling me they like my stuff is actually quite surreal, and not sure I deserved it.
I did the longest set i've had so far and my 3rd string on my guitar was threatening to break any second, I just prayed it got me through the set, which it did...so *pats guitar* Thankyou.

  • Aberdeen
  • Kitkat
  • Beer vs Cider
  • Scot the punk snail
  • Ebay
  • Work
  • Spider
  • Weirdo-e-o
  • Suicide

I cant begin really to say what the highlights for me were, soo many bands I truely adore, from Verbal Warning, Pog, Wob, Eastfield, Cracktown, Paul Carter, Steven Cooper and the Charlies, the Re-entrants, Rachel Pantechnicion, Anal Beard, Blyth Power (obviously) and some new ones I hadn't come across before.  Mingling with people and having a laugh.  Otters abound.  Got a full set of Paul Stapletons pictures and the graphic novels we were missing, which was a real treat, A wob album, blyths new album and t-shirt, pogs new album, paul carters album and a project adorno cd (cheers Russel I promise when mines all done you can have a copy) So our car on leaving the venue was considerably heavier than on arrival.

I still feel a bit jetlagged though, The whole atmosphere was excellent and I can't wait for next year.  I'll be much better I promise.

What a GIG

I've never had a gig like the one I had tonight, and yeah okay I understand that i'm new to gigging but the response from my songs was beyond awesome.  More than I ever expected or imagined.  My first set went

kitkat
eBay
Weirdo
Suicide

And then I was asked up for a second shot later on so I did

Aberdeen
Spider

Crazy.  and loads of people cornered me asked me if I had an album out or had recorded anything I gave out little moo cards with my details on them and felt really overwhlemed.  Seriously People were really happy and seemed to love what I sang and it made me feel giddy.  Although part of that was my ticker ticking too fast.  I shouldnt have gone out tonight  shouldnt be putting my heart under additional stress until the docs can figure out whats wrong with it.  But boy was it worth it tonight.  I didn't even know I was going to be gigging until about 1pm this afternoon.  I'm really glad I went.

Got invited to a new open mic night, a guy came up to me and gave me a bit of paper telling me to check the place out and that they'd like a girl like me to play.  So yeah. I'm feeling pretty swish.  Although I wasn't the best musician in the pub tonight, not by a long shot.  I've got a long way to go before I can say i'm good at guitar playing, but on a weird note  I bought a harmonica on ebay and the guy selling it lives not very far away from me and he also does guitar tuition so maybe i'll get a few lessons out of him which would rock, maybe i'll be a good guitarist yet

OOh eerrrr

The gig at Watford was awesome last night.  Hit a few bad notes singing wise...okay notes that were particular off key and not on purpose.  Also hit quite a few bad notes on the guitar but considering I can't really play I think people just took it as gospel that what I was doing was what I was supposed to be doing.  Which suited me fine.

But the reception was fantastic.  All my songs were really greatly received and it made me feel special...not speshul which is how I usually feel.  I'm pretty pleased with myself, cause those that know me will know i'm not the most confident of people and a few years back I probably would have passed out at the simple notion of getting up and playing some songs infront of people.  I just feel like this is what I was always supposed to be doing.

It doesn't matter if it doesn't make me money.  Thats not what its about.  Its about inflicting my singing on people, maybe someone will listen to the words and laugh, but mainly its just about having a good time

Sweet Tooth

Okay  so ive totally been on a bit of a sweet tooth bender recently,  theres just some things I dont know where to get anymore.  Those sherbert filled rice paper things known as flying saucers for example.  I loved those as a kid even though in the penny mix choice they actually cost 2 pence rather than 1 pence.  Strawberry laces  another good favourite of mine they're quite easy to get in Walmarts/Asda, and MARSHMELLOWS (the pink ones taste waaaay better than the white ones (although dont read the ingredients of marshmellows it came close to putting me off of them)

So the picture above,  how many can you name?  I can see the fizzy dummies on the right hand side and the fried eggs (which to eat properly you must chew the centre bit off first and then you can eat the rest of it)  theres gummi bears in there but wheres the cola cubes  and the fudge? or those little white mice with red jam in them.  Or those flat white cholcate buttons that had small little balls on them.  I hate licorish so i dont mind not seeing any of those in the pic .  Dolly mixture I wasnt particularly fond of but I liked wethers original butterscotch stuff and I liked foxs glacier mints.  Refreshers too were tasty and love hearts were okay.  Although secretly they're just chalk right?   But the real reason im posting a second post is because I need to know if I was the only kid to do this.

Did anyone tak a sweetie like smarties or trebor extra strong mints or polos or somthing where you could eat a single one of a pack,  and pretend they were oxygen pills or medicine,  like if you didnt eat one every 10 minutes you'd run out of air or die or something.  Me and my sisters used to play that game all the time with smarties (the blue ones tasted the best but now blue smarties dont exist anymore so the orange ones are the next best, and I dont care what anyone says you CAN taste the difference)  I also for some reason used to eat opal fruits (or starburst as theyre known now) and chewits with the wrappers still on.  it seems too much effort to unwrap them.  I was such an odd kid.  So whats your favourite sweetie?  Can you still get hold of them now

Welcome and Salutations

Hi there. Welcome. Sorry this place is a little bare at the moment. Bear with me and i'll have a few potplants and netcurtains dotted around the place to make it feel more like home. I promise. Just got to figure out how this do-hickey works first. The you're in for it. Seriously. I'm a bit of a wild card, a jack of all interests I think....with the exception of football and cricket. Just can't get into those. But other than that i'll try anything at least once. My main interests at the moment compromise of...in no particular order...

  • Crochetting random things like punk snails and caravans
  • Geocaching
  • Playing comedy songs at gigs and anywhere really
  • anime/japanese/manga
  • Computer games, mainly of the RPG variety
  • Anything 80's retro, particularly cartoons I used to watch as a kid

So if any of these strike a chord in you, maybe you want to hang around. I'm 28 live just outside london even though secretly i'm scottish, dont tell anyone okay. I live with my husband and 2 cats.
